One of the best things I've seen in this class was the physics teacher who describes how learning to skateboard is somewhat different from learning as it happens in schools. I'm not sure that there is a message here specific to ELLs, but I'm guessing that at least part of it, the part about not stigmatizing failure, works for ELLs and other living things.
I've created a story problem and field tested it a few times.
